Why Urunji Child-Care Trust is doing things differently…
In Malawi, the Urunji Child-Care Trust seeks specifically to aid and assist in the protection of perhaps the most vulnerable of all: children. UCCT seeks to help children in particular, not by merely throwing aid at the problems that lead to improper treatment or conditions for children, but instead by seeking to engage with the community itself in order to implement sustainable and meaningful solutions. The Trust is specifically geared toward community engagement, in hope of solving problems in a sustainable, community-driven manner. That aspect of community engagement is a part of Urunji’s vision of providing an environment in which children have access to quality education, proper nutrition, sound health and life-skills.
Urunji’s vision of providing an environment in which communities are afforded the opportunity to learn, thrive, and engage in the process of understanding and claiming their natural rights to quality education, proper nutrition, sound health and life-skills. This is why we as Urunji Child-Care Trust work hand-in-hand with the communities to solve the problems they face to ensure sustainability, community involvement and community ownership of these interventions. Urunji Child-Care Trust is NOT an orphanage.
Our local affiliations include the Malawi NGO Board, the Council for NGOs in Malawi (CONGOMA), the Lilongwe District Council and the Ministry of Education, among other solid relationships with organizations. While we have no contractual relationships, our international relationships include the White Ribbon Alliance, Teach AIDS and others as listed on Our Partners and Supporters page.
Urunji Child-Care Trust has operations in India and is headquartered in Malawi. We are hoping to open a country office in Zambia soon.

Despite all the setbacks and problems Malawi and Africa as a continent face today; We envision a nation where children with quality education, proper nutrition, sound health and life-skills are a reality. We believe there is no Vision without Provision. This is why we are working together with the communities to ensure little dreams turn into great achievements in the near and distant future.
To bring innovative solutions to the communities that will combat poverty, malaria, malnutrition, environmental degradation and HIV/AIDS through education, economic empowerment, community participation, life-skills training and global connections.
Our Core Values
1. Integrity and Professionalism:
Urunji Child-Care Trust ensures that donor funds are used according to the budget line(s) and that all transactions are done in a transparent manner. Any payments above $200 are not made unless approved by the Procurement Committee.
We provide financial reports to donors no matter how big or small a grant/donation is. We believe timely presentation of these reports cements the trust we earn from our donors – the more time it takes to prepare reports, the more suspicious donors become.
2. Fairness, Equity & Teamwork:
We endeavour to reach out to all vulnerable and needy children and their families regardless of their race, educational background, family history or colour. We do not support political parties, religious groups or a particular group of the society.
We involve the grassroots in problemsolving. We do not take an implementation role: we take a facilitator role so that programmes will be sustainable even in the event we wind-up programmes in areas where we work.
All our employees are trained to treat all our stakeholders with respect. We do believe that poverty is not a choice and that poor and needy children should not be taken advantage of.
All our Home Visitors* are specially trained professionals who undergo rigorous training and are hand-picked by the Appointments Committee after a successful working interview.
